I first met Sian, Alex and 9 year old Jessie at a Dog Show in East Preston, West Sussex where I was exhibiting my dog photography wall art. They loved my photography style and booked a session with me and we subsequently met at one of my favourite locations, a beautiful woodland near to Arundel in West Sussex.
We had such a wonderful time together—and Jessie, of course, was the undeniable star of the show. Despite being a senior girl, she was full of energy and laser-focused on her beloved tennis ball. The moment Sian threw it, Jessie launched like a rocket after it—so fast and full of life, it was lovely to watch.
The biggest challenge wasn’t getting her to play, but getting her to slow down just long enough for me to capture those magical moments! Luckily, I have a few tricks up my sleeve—and what we ended up with were some truly beautiful images.
After the session, I carefully edited each photo, spending hours fine-tuning every detail to bring out the best in Jessie. Sian had mentioned how much she loved the soft, autumnal tones on my website, so I worked with that inspiration to create a gentle, pastel-toned finish that felt both nostalgic and warm. I couldn’t wait to share the results.
When I showed Sian and Alex their finished portraits, their reaction made all the hard work worthwhile. They were genuinely moved—torn between several favourites—but in the end, Sian got her way (as all good dog mums should!).
A few weeks later, I hand-delivered a beautifully framed piece of wall art along with a mounted print, and watching them see their portraits in print for the first time was such a special moment. The pride and love in their eyes said it all.
